Quidditch History

Quidditch

Quidditch is a competition that is always exciting, and usually bitterly fought every school year between the four school Houses. Each House is represented by its Quidditch team and at the end of the year, the winners are awarded the very prestigious Hogwarts Quiddtich Cup. In the 1980s the cup was presented to Slytherin more often than not, however, our Beloved Gryffindor put up one heck of a fight in the 1990s.

The Hogarts Quidditch Championship is a combination of the four house Quidditch teams playing against one another throughout the course of the year. Each team plays 3 games, with an overall total of 6 games of Quidditch per year for the school to enjoy. Considering there is such a small number of games, every game is eagerly awaited and is usually attended by the entire school, including the teachers. Some of the Professors can be expected to lose their normal calm demeanor and become much more excited about the result of the games than the students. Commentary for each game was, in the past, provided regularly by a well known Gryffindor, Lee Jordan, a task he carried out since his third year, and possibly before that as well. Lee was known to spruce up his commentaries with a healthy dose of Gryffindor bias, a shameless crush on Angelina Johnson, and more than a few swear words, which were not always to the amusement of Professor McGonagall.

Certain matches will see the entire school take sides, as everyone comes out in support of one side or the other. Usually, students take the side of whoever is playing against Slytherin, as everyone from the other houses objected to the disgustingly successful strong-arm tactics employed by that particular team during games. This is how the other houses have reacted in the past. These days, while there are still many who would love to see Slytherin lose, there are an almost equal amount of students from other houses who now cheer for Slytherin to win.

Previously, the 6 games in the Hogwarts season would take place in a certain sequence, which is subject to change under certain circumstances (such as if your Seeker has been attacked by a Hippogriff). The regular sequence is as follows:

♦ Gryffindor vs Slytherin (held in early November)
♦ Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw (held in late November)
♦ Ravenclaw vs Slytherin (held in January)
♦ Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff (held in February)
♦ Hufflepuff vs Slytherin (held after the Easter break)
♦ Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw (held in late May)

The league is created from the outcome of each game, the team with the most wins is placed at the top of the pile. In the common event of two or more teams having won the same number of games, their league position is decided by “points difference” (which means the number of points scored minus the number of points conceded). The team with the best points difference is placed higher in the league.

Quidditch results are important for two reasons:
♦ The pride of winning the Quidditch Cup
♦ The House Points that are at stake.

In 1992, it was stated before the Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff match that if Gryffindor won, they would overtake Slytherin in the House Championship for the first time in 7 years. It was never made clear how many points are awarded for Quidditch victories, until Harry Potter was docked 50 points by Professor McGonagall for running round the astronomy tower at 1:00 in the morning, and he feared that he’s lost the lead he gained through his last Quidditch victory. Therefore the points awarded are assumed to be 150.

The results of all known matches in the Quidditch Championship between the 1990-91 season (the year before Harry went to Hogwarts) and the 1995-96 season, along with the winners of the Quidditch Cup, are listed below.

*Note that in two of the years the competition was cancelled.* Which must have been an annoyance of all the students. On one occasion this was due to a series of Petrifications when the Chamber of Secrets had been opened, which nobody could really complain about, and took place halfway through the season.
♦ The other cancellation was of the entire season and was as a result of the Triwizard Tournament.

Gryffindor Quidditch Team has won the house Cup at least 6 times and has been captained by:

♦ James Potter
♦ Oliver Wood
♦ Angelina Johnson
♦ Harry Potter
♦ Ginny Weasley
♦ Demelza Robins
♦ Anna Mirfield
♦ Vlad Pheonix
♦ Alec Brendon
♦ Tyler Slick
♦ James Potter (Harry's son) & co-captained by Oliver Wood Jr. (self expanatory name)

Interestingly, a member of the Weasley family has held every one of the positions on the team. Ginny was a Chaser and a substitute Seeker, Charlie was a Seeker, Fred and George Weasley were Beaters, and Ron was the Keeper.

Fred Weasley: "We know Oliver's speech by heart. We were in the team last year."
Oliver Wood: "Shut up, you two. This is the best team Gryffindor's had in years. We're going to win. I know it."
— Fred Weasley and Oliver Wood

Harry Potter began playing Quidditch in his first year at Hogwarts. He was the youngest player in more than 100 years, (since first years were not normally allowed on the team.) He also had to be given special permission to have his own broom (which was a Nimbus 2000). Oliver Wood had the Gryffindor Quidditch Team practice three times a week. Harry Potter caught the Snitch in his very first game, which was against Slytherin. This gave Gryffindor victory in a hotly contested tie. Harry caught it once again, to seal Gryffindor's second win of the season against Hufflepuff, a game that was biasedly refereed by Severus Snape. In Harry's absence, Gryffindor was defeated in their final game of the season against Ravenclaw, which cost them their chance at the title.

"It'll be down to you, Harry, to show them that a Seeker has to have something more than a rich father. Get to that Snitch before Malfoy or die trying, Harry, because we've got to win today, we've go to."
—Oliver Wood

The team beat Slytherin in their openining game of the 1992-1993 school year, but they were unable to play their remaining two games, because the Quidditch Cup was canceled due to attacks on Muggle-born students.

Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff - Hufflepuff victory by 100 points. This match was re-arranged from its usual date due to the postponement of the Gryffindor vs Slytherin match. The reason for the change was an injury to the Slytherin Seeker, although Oliver Wood thought they just didn’t fancy a game in poor weather conditions.

♦ Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw - easy victory for Ravenclaw.
♦ Ravenclaw vs Slytherin - narrow victory for Slytherin.
♦ Gryffindor 230 [color=blue]Ravenclaw 30 - members of the Slytherin team tried to put Harry off by pretending to be Dementors during this game.
♦ Hufflepuff vs Slytherin - easy Slytherin victory (not stated, but they must have won this match easily to go into the final game leading the Championship by 200 points).
♦ Gryffindor 230 Slytherin 20

Gryffindor win the Quidditch Cup.

"This is our last chance - my last chance - to win the Quidditch Cup. I'll be leaving at the end of this year. I'll never get another shot at it."

—Oliver Wood

In the 1993-1994 school year, the team is said by Lee Jordan to be "the best team Hogwarts has seen in the last few years", as this was the first year that they had won the Quidditch Cup since Charlie Weasley was on the team, even though they lost the first match against Hufflepuff due to Harry falling off his broomstick after being attacked by dementors. Gryffindor then beat Ravenclaw. Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup on the final day of the season when Harry Potter caught the Snitch in a re-scheduled match against Slytherin. This was also the last year that Oliver Wood captained the team. On that school year, Harry Potter wore the jersey number 7.

1994-1995

The team did not play in the 1994-1995 school year due to the Triwizard Tournament being held at Hogwarts.

"Weasley cannot save a thing,
He can't block a single ring.
That's why Slytherins all sing,
Weasley is our king!..."
—Slytherins mocking Ron about his Keeper abilities

During the 1995-1996 school year, Angelina Johnson was the Quidditch captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Due to previous players graduating, selecting team players involved a tough try-out. Ron Weasley was the only new player to make the team.

Gryffindor began their season with a victory against Slytherin. Shortly after the match, Draco Malfoy insulted and provoked Fred and George Weasley and Harry Potter. Harry and George promptly attacked him, but all three had their broomsticks confiscated and were banned from Quidditch for life by Dolores Umbridge, then-High Inquisitor of Hogwarts. They were replaced by Andrew Kirke, Jack Sloper, and Ginny Weasley, respectively.

In the final game of the season against Ravenclaw, Ginny Weasley beat Cho Chang in the race for the Snitch. Gryffindor won the match and the Quidditch Cup.

Following Umbridge's removal from the school, Harry's, Fred's and George's bans were lifted, so Harry could play again in the next year at school.

♦ Ravenclaw vs Slytherin - victory for Ravenclaw (not stated in the book, but inferred from standings going into the last game of the season).
♦ Gryffindor 60 Hufflepuff 320 - Cormac McLaggen played in goal for Gryffindor in this game due to Ron having been poisoned. McLaggen fractured Harry's skull with a Bludger during the course of the game whilst attempting to show the Gryffindor Beater Peakes how to play.
♦ Hufflepuff vs Slytherin - victory for Slytherin (not stated in the book, but inferred from standings going into the last game of the season).
♦ Gryffindor 450 - Ravenclaw 140 - Harry was in detention for attacking Draco Malfoy during this game and so Ginny Weasley played Seeker for the Gryffindor team.

Gryffindor wins the Quidditch Cup

Harry Potter was appointed as the Quidditch Captain this year. Ginny Weasley and Demelza Robins replaced Angelina Johnson and Alicia Spinnet as Chasers.

Ron Weasley and Katie Bell both became unintended victims of Draco Malfoy's attempts to kill Albus Dumbledore this year, and while they were unable to play, their spots in the team were taken over by Cormac McLaggen and Dean Thomas. After they were healed they both returned to the team. Harry was banned from the season's last game by Professor Snape, therefore, for that final match, Ginny Weasley played as seeker, and her position as a chaser was taken over, once again by Dean Thomas. In this year, they won the Quidditch Cup.

1997-1998

It is unknown if the cup was played for in the 1997-1998 school year. However, Hogwarts and it's inhabitants, led by Harry Potter, brought about the demise of Voldemort.
